Opinion: Newcastle player's hopes of going to the World Cup with England now look over

It is now very difficult to see how Newcastle United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale gets into England’s World Cup squad.

Ramsdale was one of six Newcastle United players called up for the final England camps before the 2026 World Cup, alongside Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn, Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes.

Was selling Isak in the manner they did where the wheels started to come off for PIF at Newcastle?

The Southampton loanee has five caps for his country and travelled to the 2022 World Cup as England’s back-up goalkeeper.

However, Thomas Tuchel has sent Ramsdale back to Newcastle United, which surely ends his chances of going to a second World Cup.

England confirm Ramsdale has been released from squad

Indeed, James Trafford – the player Newcastle tried to sign before moving for Ramsdale – was given the nod to play in England’s friendly against Uruguay.

Assuming that Jordan Pickford will start for England at the World Cup, there were four goalkeepers in the enlarged England squad battling for two spots.

Which player do you regret selling more – Elliot Anderson or Yankuba Minteh?

Thanks, PSR 😡

Trafford won out on Friday night, while Dean Henderson is only just coming into the squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Japan.

The fact, then, that Ramsdale has returned to his club while even the uncapped Jason Steele remains with the national squad is fairly telling.

At best, Ramsdale now looks to be fifth choice for his country.

A statement posted on England’s official website read: “A revised England squad of 27 players are preparing for Tuesday’s fixture with Japan at Wembley Stadium.

In total, eight players are due to leave camp, including Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

“John Stones is returning to Manchester City for assessment after picking up an issue in training prior to Friday night’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay.

“Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Arsenal’s Noni Madueke have gone back to their clubs with knocks picked up during the match.

“Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka will also return to Arsenal for medical assessment, having arrived on Friday along with nine other players.

“The rest of that group comprised of Dean Henderson, Nico O’Reilly, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi, Dan Burn, Elliot Anderson, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane.”

It has been a strange season for the 27-year-old.

Ramsdale has not convinced at Newcastle, but that does not mean he hasn’t played well at times.

Though Nick Pope’s days as the first-choice custodian here on Tyneside would now appear to be over, it seems very unlikely that Ramsdale has done enough to convince the club to sign him on a permanent basis.

That means a return to Southampton looks the most likely outcome at the end of the season, and his long-term future there surely depends on what division they are playing in next time around.
