West Ham prospect dealt fresh blow as loan club improves without him

West Ham prospect Kaelan Casey is facing a setback during his loan spell at Leyton Orient.

Casey spent the first half of the 2025/26 season on loan at Swansea City in the Championship before being recalled in January.

The central defender then signed for Orient and was expected to star in League One in the second part of the campaign.

Unfortunately, Casey has not lived up to expectations at the fellow East London club, and the last two games have raised a fresh concern.

What should West Ham's plan be with the youngster?

Orient manager Richie Wellens was delighted to sign Casey and almost immediately put him into the starting eleven.

He started three consecutive games for the O’s in January, but they conceded six goals and lost all three.

Having been temporarily dropped, Casey was later reintroduced to the line-up and played six more times.

Orient won four of those, but the league’s worst defence continued to ship goals and did not keep a single clean sheet.

Now, in the last two matches against Wycombe Wanderers and Exeter City, Wellens has partnered club captain Will Forrester and Jack Simpson at the back.

The defensive duo has kept back-to-back clean sheets, the first time Orient have done so in the entire 25/26 season.

Perhaps it is only a coincidence, but the results suggest that Orient are a better team without Casey on the pitch.

While this does not necessarily mean the West Ham loanee is not good enough, it is another significant blow in his young career.

Having failed to impress in the Championship, Casey has not proven to be a top player in League One, either.

Hopefully, once they are safe from relegation, Wellens will hand him a few more opportunities to earn his first clean sheet in an O’s shirt.
