'Anything is possible' for transformational Sunderland signing backed to be 'great'

Le Fee was a transformational signing for the Black Cats when he arrived initially on loan from Roma in January last year.

The midfielder's move to Italy hadn't gone to plan but it was still a gamble from the Frenchman to swap Serie A for the Championship. And it worked out perfectly for Le Fee and Sunderland.

After leading the Black Cats to promotion, Le Fee's loan was made permanent in the summer and, despite the overhaul of the squad, the 26-year-old has remained one of the most important players for the Wearsiders.

After starting the first couple of games on the bench as he worked his way back from a summer injury, Le Fee has been a nailed on starter for Le Bris' side, impressing on the left and in a more central role.

He missed the recent defeat at home to Brighton and was only fit enough for a place on the bench at Newcastle, but made a huge impact at St James' Park even though he was only introduced with five minutes to play, teeing up the dramatic late winner for Brian Brobbey.

Le Fee recently clocked his 50th appearance for the Black Cats, and Le Bris is delighted with how things have gone for the midfielder at the Stadium of Light.

"I'm really pleased, because after Lorient he had good spells, but also difficult moments in Rennes and then in Roma," said Sunderland's boss.

"When you reach 24, 25 years old, you never know if you still just have potential or if you can become a great player.

"I thought he could be a great player. Coming from Roma last season to the Championship, it was a strong decision from him and he showed great quality. He got an injury in February as well, so it was a question for him about his physical consistency.

"This season, the Premier League is probably the hardest and most demanding league in the world so if you can stay consistent as he was, it shows something.

"I'm really pleased because of the ability to repeat, but to play in different positions as well. He's always smart, always well-connected with the squad, always keen to do the tasks, even if it's a defensive task, he will do it with purpose. He's a good team-mate and a really good player."

Given what followed Le Fee's arrival - promotion and the summer influx of new faces who have helped Sunderland quickly establish themselves back at the top level, there's a strong case to say the Frenchman is the most important signing the Black Cats have made over the last couple of years.

Le Bris said: "He was an important signing for sure, because he's really smart and connected with our identity. It's not easy to find a player like that.

"He's able to play in different positions, always committed out of possession and in possession.

"He's intelligent, so he connects really well with his teammates. He's a really good player. He's good, but he still has room for improvement, for sure, because he wants to learn. That means anything is possible."
