Sandro Tonali is quickly jumping to the top of Man Utd’s transfer wishlist, and the narrative behind it is even better than the signing would be.
Manchester United’s midfield revamp is starting to take shape as the season enters its final stretch, and Sandro Tonali is becoming the new favourite.
Man City’s interest in Elliot Anderson complicated matters a bit, but United can do a lot worse than chasing after Tonali as a result.
That’s not just because Tonali would be a brilliant addition, which he will, but also because it’s the perfect chapter in a narrative that began with Ineos taking over at Old Trafford.

Man Utd’s uneasy dynamic with Newcastle
Since Ineos arrived at Man Utd and made Dan Ashworth their public target for the Director of Football role, an uneasy relationship has developed with Newcastle.
Newcastle were also nouveau riche and wanted to emphasise that newfound status, only to be shown their place by United, who was struggling as well.
Ashworth was extracted from the club despite Newcastle’s public posturing, but the damage to the Toons’ ego was done.

Games against them had an air of a one-sided rivalry to them, and Newcastle revelled in beating United, even if they kept losing the prestige war.
Repeated body blows were given to them last summer, when the likes of Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo rejected their advances to sign for United.
To make matters worse, they signed former United man Anthony Elanga for £50m, who has flattered to deceive this season, making their FFP problems worse.
It didn’t help that Ashworth’s departure caused upheaval at Newcastle, only for United to sack him soon anyway.
Eddie Howe has publicly accepted that his players are more motivated to do well against Utd than against most other teams.
Newcastle’s “Who’s that team we call United?” jibe at Man Utd has continued to age poorly as they are repeatedly shown their place in the footballing hierarchy.
Tonali’s Man Utd transfer could be the biggest body blow of them all.
Sandro Tonali’s Man Utd transfer would be a huge blow
So far, the blows to Newcastle have pertained to officials like Ashworth or players who just chose United over them, which can happen.

However, with Sandro Tonali, they are on the cusp of becoming the ultimate “little fish” in the pond if United make this move happen.
Bruno Guimaraes is the captain, but Tonali is the crown jewel of their squad, forget the midfield.
He’s their statement signing as the player who paved the way for others to start seeing Newcastle as a “big club” after years of being in purgatory under Mike Ashley.
If his head is turned for Man Utd, then it will firmly establish Newcastle’s place in the football hierarchy as the “step before elites”.
Tonali’s transfer won’t just be strengthening United and weakening a rival, but it will also set in stone the reality check for Newcastle.
