Dominic Calvert-Lewin's opportunity to further his case for inclusion at the World Cup ended at the weekend with the Leeds United striker sent home from England duty alongside a number of international team-mates.

The 29-year-old forward was handed 36-minutes off the bench on Friday night when England drew 1-1 with Uruguay, having come on to replace Dominic Solanke. Calvert-Lewin did relatively well, save for missing a golden opportunity to score with a header.

England boss Thomas Tuchel had picked an enlarged 35-man squad for this international break, stating he wanted to give some players an opportunity to rest, while taking a good luck at a number of players who had not been called up recently. The plan was always to rotate some of his squad players.

Unfortunately for Calvert-Lewin, he and not Solanke has been chosen to depart to make way for the nine players who joined up with the squad on Friday, including number one striker Harry Kane. It means the forward will not get another chance to impress against Japan on Tuesday night, and must now focus on ending the season well with Leeds if he is to push his case for a place at the World Cup.

A statement from England about the changes read; “A revised England squad of 27 players are preparing for Tuesday’s fixture with Japan at Wembley Stadium,” the statement read. “In total, eight players are due to leave camp, including Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

“John Stones is returning to Manchester City for assessment after picking up an issue in training prior to Friday night’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Arsenal’s Noni Madueke have gone back to their clubs with knocks picked up during the match.

“Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka will also return to Arsenal for medical assessment, having arrived on Friday along with nine other players. The rest of that group comprised of Dean Henderson, Nico O’Reilly, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi, Dan Burn, Elliot Anderson, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane.”
