Fabrizio Romano explains why Liverpool passed on signing Nico Schlotterbeck

Nico Schlotterbeck is now expected to commit his future to Borussia Dortmund with a long-term contract extension, despite strong interest from both Liverpool and Real Madrid.

It has been reported here at DaveOCKOP that Liverpool made contact with Nico Schlotterbeck’s camp as far back as October.

Talks between Dortmund and the player’s camp have been described as positive, with multiple meetings leaving all parties increasingly confident an agreement will be reached. Reports in Germany now state he is “on the verge” of finalising that extension, which is expected to add around five more years to his stay.

Sky Germany reported over the weekend that Borussia Dortmund have now reached a full agreement with Nico Schlotterbeck’s camp on a deal running to 2031, elevating him to one of the club’s highest earners and inserting a release clause that will kick in from 2027.

Now Fabrizio Romano has explained why the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid have not tried to push harder for the German international. Reporting on his YouTube channel, the Italian said:

“Nico Schlotterbeck is closing in on a new contract with Borussia Dortmund, it’s almost done,” Romano said.

“It’s including a release clause, not for summer 2026, but for summer 2027 in excess of 65 million Euros.”

“Real Madrid have been interested for some time, but never sent any official proposal. Liverpool never sent any official proposal also because they signed Jeremy Jacquet in the summer transfer window.”

Jeremy Jacquet’s arrival is ultimately what closed the door on any serious Liverpool move for Schlotterbeck, and that decision now looks more and more calculated rather than cautious.

By tying down a highly rated young defender on a long-term deal in the summer, Liverpool effectively took themselves out of the running for another big-money centre-back and allowed Dortmund to win the race to secure Schlotterbeck’s future on their own terms.
