Sunderland may now need to pay €40m – Need to increase offer by €15m

Víctor Muñoz

Despite being only 22-years-of-age, Victor Munoz has had quite a journey in the game. Sunderland tried to sign him some months ago and now, his value has already grown.

Towards the end of the 2024/25 season, the attacker was at Real Madrid and was criticised for a vital miss in El Clasico. Whilst that did cost Los Blancos the game and even the La Liga title, Munoz has turned things around quite quickly in his career.

The 22-year-old joined Osasuna in the summer and has impressed, contributing to 11 goals in all competitions.

This led to Sunderland making an attempt to sign the Spaniard in January. This was covered bySport Witness, as an offer from Wearside was on the table for the Spanish side.

Fast forward to this month, Munoz was called up to the Spanish national team. He also scored on his debut, finding the back of the net against Serbia in a friendly last week.

This has resulted in the winger’s situation catching attention once again.

Sunderland told to pay more

Today,El Pais takes note of Munoz’s journey in the game and note how he impressed against Serbia.

They believe he can depart Osasuna in the summer, with Real Madrid still having a 50% resale clause in his contract. The Spanish giants knew about his skillset and that is why they inserted a clause to keep some amount of control over the winger.

The outlet clarify that Sunderland offered €25m to sign him in January. This may have been satisfying for Osasuna but the ex-Los Blancos graduate decided to reject the move.

His contract has a release clause worth €40m and that is what the Black Cats will have to pay to sign Munoz. This is largely because of how the player’s stature has grown in the last few months.

He can also play at the World Cup in the summer, which will only act as another way of establishing the value Munoz.

El Pais believe a host of clubs remain interested, amidst an indication that he could depart in the summer. Sunderland are now a more attractive option, given they’ve shown they won’t be going straight back to the Championship.

Our take: Sunderland should stay in the race

It is interesting to note that Munoz hasn’t just impressed this season. For Real Madrid Castilla during the 2024/25 campaign, he scored 11 league goals and racked up seven assists too.

Moreover, he can play on either flank and has also played as a striker multiple times at club level. Munoz is believed to thrive in 1v1 situations and boasts pace that can beat most defenders in the final third.

This unpredictability can come in handy for any club – and that includes Sunderland. His release clause seems relatively reachable for English clubs, which is why Regis Le Bris’ side should continue to track the talent. It won’t be a surprise if competition for him rises, especially if he plays at the World Cup.
