Liverpool are eyeing a move to sign Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries this summer after a surprise release clause was revealed in his contract, according to L'Interista.
The Reds are expected to have a busy summer transfer window, strengthening their squad after a poor season which has seen them battling to qualify for the Champions League, despite being the reigning Premier League champions and spending a record £450m last summer.
A number of positions are expected to be targeted to make the squad stronger, and one of them is the right side of the team with the knowledge that Mohamed Salah is set to depart.
Liverpool Eyeing Cut-Price Dumfries Deal
Inter's Denzel Dumfries
Dumfries, who has been described as 'world-class', has found himself relegated to a back-up option at Inter Milan this season under Christian Chivu, despite being a key member of the side that reached the Champions League final last season.
The Netherlands international is currently under contract at the San Siro until 2028, but he penned that deal back in 2024 and at the time insisted on a release clause worth €25m (£21.7m) to be included in case of interest from other clubs.
Now Inter are trying to hand him a one-year extension to remove that deal, but Liverpool are among the clubs showing a strong interest in signing him this summer, and it remains to be seen if he will be willing to stay in Serie A after losing his starting spot.
It's understood that Dumfries would be open to making the move to Anfield, with personal terms not expected to be an issue due to the money available in the Premier League. A deal currently hinges on whether Inter are able to convince him to stay, rather than make the move away for a new challenge.
Dumfries and Frimpong Are Very Similar
Denzel Dumfries
Liverpool currently have Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley as their options at right-back, but both have been dealing with injury issues all season, so it's no surprise the club are looking at potential alternatives.
However, both Dumfries and Frimpong have similar attributes and are both also capable of playing further up the pitch, which would bring versatility to the squad and allow the manager to potentially change systems on occasion.
GIVEMESPORT asked ChatGPT to rate Dumfries' potential arrival out of 10, and this was its response:
"6.5/10 - Denzel Dumfries offers elite athleticism, goal threat, and value at ~£21.7m (cheap for a proven international) .
"But he’s 29, injury concerns exist, and he’s more wing-back than full-back—questionable fit for Liverpool’s system. Good short-term option, limited long-term upside."
