Liverpool are already hard at work preparing for what appears set to be another busy summer of transfer business.

And the Reds have already reaped the benefits of their planning, having wrapped up two signings who could prove crucial in the coming years. It would be a huge surprise if Arne Slot's team were to replicate the near £450million spent on fresh faces last summer - despite recouping more than £200m in sales.

However, the Merseysiders are clearly not resting on their laurels while competitors target potential signings. Chief executive Michael Edwards has already approved two new signings ahead of the summer transfer window. Both possess significant potential in terms of their likely impact on Slot's defence specifically.

Jeremy Jacquet represents the most significant new signing set to be announced at the conclusion of this campaign. The centre-back will join Liverpool from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes after both clubs agreed a £60m deal back in January.

There was talk at the time that Jacquet might have completed the switch during the winter window, a period when Liverpool's backline seemed to be faltering. However, it was eventually decided that Rennes would keep hold of the 20-year-old for an additional six months.

Slot may be ruing not pushing harder for a January transfer, especially considering the shoulder injury Jacquet suffered against Lens in February, which required successful surgery earlier this month.

With an estimated recovery time of eight to 12 weeks, Jacquet could potentially turn up at Anfield lacking full match fitness. However, his limited game time over the next few months at least reduces the chance of him suffering a more serious injury while he's away from Liverpool's watchful eye.

Liverpool have also confirmed another transfer in principle that will bring another centre-back to the club. However, Austrian under-18 international Ifeanyi Ndukwe is viewed as an even longer-term prospect, given his tender age of 18.

Despite his youth, the towering 6'6" talent has become a regular feature in Austria Wien's reserve team. The young defender has made 10 appearances in Austria's second division this season, although he's yet to make his debut for the first team.

Since his move to England was announced, Ndukwe has started to clock up more substitute appearances for Austria Wien's second side. However, that much sought-after first-team debut continues to evade him.

He has also moved up from Austria's under-17 squad to the under-18 level this season. He played twice for the under-18s in consecutive friendlies against Portugal last month, losing one 1-0 and drawing the other 1-1.
