From Virgil van Dijk to Sadio Mane - The greatest Liverpool XI to have played alongside Mo Salah

Mohamed Salah has had many world-class teammates during his time at Liverpool, but who makes it into the his greatest XI of Reds colleagues?

The Egyptian King will leave Anfield at the end of this season, following a legendary nine-year spell that has amassed many trophies and individual record.

But what’s the greatest XI to have played with Salah at Liverpool?

Here are our picks, with talent and longevity both taken into account.

Alisson

Alisson Becker of Liverpool looks on during the Premier League match between Liverpool and West Ham United at Anfield on February 28, 2026 in Liverpool, England.

We start with a no-brainer, with Alisson not only Salah’s best goalkeeping teammate, but also comfortably Liverpool’s leading player in that position in the Premier League era.

An iconic figure who helped take the Reds to another level when he joined in 2018, there is still hopefully a few more years in him, despite his injury issues.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

It’s easy to underrate Trent Alexander-Arnold because of his move to Real Madrid, but he is a special footballer who contributed so much for his boyhood club.

Salah enjoyed a fantastic on-pitch relationship with him down the right flank, linking for so many goals down the years.

Joel Matip

It’s a tight call between Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate, but the former just gets the nod.

Matip was a slightly more consistent presence for Liverpool alongside Salah, standing out as arguably the Reds’ best player in the 2019 Champions League final win over Tottenham.

Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool takes to the field prior to the Premier League match between Sunderland and Liverpool at Stadium of Light on February 11, 2026 in Sunderland, England.

Like Alisson, Virgil van Dijk also walks into the team.

Possibly the best centre-back of his generation, the Dutchman has been Liverpool’s most influential player of the past decade, along with Salah himself.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Salah calls Van Dijk his greatest-ever teammate when he leaves this summer.

Andy Robertson

If both Salah and Andy Robertson depart this summer, Liverpool will lose a huge amount of leadership and winning mentality.

Robertson has been a incredible player for the Merseysiders – frankly, nobody comes close to being this XI instead, even though Milos Kerkez is a great long-term prospect.

Fabinho

Liverpool still haven’t fully replaced Fabinho in the No. 6 role, with the Brazilian one of the best in the world in his position at his peak.

The Reds’ “Lighthouse” helped take the Reds up a huge gear in the 2018/19 season, and while Ryan Gravenberch is a top-quality young player, he isn’t yet at his level.

Jordan Henderson

Jordan Henderson continues to divide opinion even to this day, but his critics cannot argue with what he achieved as Liverpool captain, lifting the Champions League and Premier League.

He and Salah spent six great years together, proving to be two of the Reds’ biggest influences on and off the pitch, so leaving him out would feel harsh.

Alexis Mac Allister was close to getting the nod – Gini Wijnaldum, too – but a below-par 2025/26 season works against the Argentine, as well as longevity.

Thiago

Granted, Thiago wasn’t at Liverpool for too long, and had injury problems, but how can you leave out a player that talented?

When he was at his best, he ran the show – who else remembers that stunning performance at home to Manchester United in 2022? – and Salah no doubt loved playing alongside him.

Dominik Szoboszlai

In true Dominik Szoboszlai fashion, we’re utilising his versatility to play him out of position on the right wing.

Given his brilliance this season, and general quality since arriving in 2023, it feels like there has to be a place for him, and he can be a future Anfield great.

Salah’s incredible availability means there has rarely been another right-sided player in his time, so who else deserves to be in ahead of Szoboszlai?

Sadio Mane

Liverpool's Sadio Mane celebrates scoring their first goal

Sadio Mane is another shoo-in, having been one of Liverpool’s standout attacking players of the past few decades, performing as well as anyone in the title-winning 2019/20 season.

He and Salah had their spats, and a healthy rivalry, but they were hugely fond of one another, and made up a chunk of the best attacking unit in Europe at one point.

Speaking of which…

Roberto Firmino

You couldn’t have asked for a better foil for Salah than Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool’s brilliant Brazilian was a joy to watch, combining subtle class with an admirable work ethic, and so many of Salah’s goals were because of his selflessness and movement.

Not a bad XI really!
