Newcastle United remain relaxed over Sandro Tonali's future despite an increase in speculation over the player's future.
With the international break in full swing, stories about the upcoming transfer window have increased and Tonali's name has been front and centre. The Italian star has been linked with a host of clubs across Europe.
The speculation over Manchester United's interest in the player, in particular, has ramped up over the last couple of days. The Red Devils are in the market for a new midfielder this summer to replace Casemiro, with Tonali and Newcastle skipper Bruno Guimaraes both linked with moves to Old Trafford.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano stoked the fires further on his YouTube channel by claiming Man Utd have already contacted Tonali's camp to explore a potential summer move.
He claimed: "One of the names very high on their shortlist is Sandro Tonali. Tonali has been excellent recently, scoring for Italy against Northern Ireland and performing very well for Newcastle United. Newcastle also expect potential movement around him this summer.
“It is important to note that Manchester United have already made contact with Tonali’s camp to be informed about his situation. There is still no agreement, no negotiation stage yet, but the interest is real and consistent.
“Tonali appreciates the idea of returning to a bigger European stage if all parties align, so this one will be worth keeping an eye on.
“There is also interest from Arsenal, confirmed, but again nothing advanced there either. For Italian clubs, including Juventus, the deal would be financially almost impossible.”
Newcastle are frustrated with Tonali's agent, Giuseppe Riso, who has spoken openly about his client's prospects of departing the Magpies. However, they remain calm on the topic given Tonali is under contract at Newcastle until 2029 at least, with an option to extend the deal until 2030.
Riso told Italian media earlier this month, when asked about a move to either Man City and Arsenal, Riso said: “Exactly, that was the goal from the moment he went to England – to try to make him a star player. I think he’s the Italian footballer with one of the highest values in the world.
"If he shines at the World Cup, will City or Arsenal be hot on his heels? I don’t know, but it’s very likely. Everyone is waiting for the World Cup; then a thousand scenarios will unfold, but it all kicks off after the World Cup."
As well as Tonali, former Newcastle midfielder Elliot Anderson is the other midfielder who is the subject of much transfer speculation this summer. The Wallsend Boys Club graduate could leave Nottingham Forest after the World Cup, with talk of an £80m fee on his head.
Anderson is a player Eddie Howe would love to be reunited with. However, the 23-year-old says he isn't focusing on anything other than his club form and the summer tournament.
"We've obviously got the World Cup this summer so all my eyes are on that," he said. "Playing for England is all I'm thinking about at the minute."
