Defender speaks on bid to end club’s 30-year drought.
Pau Torres reckons Villa must win a trophy if they want to be remembered as a great team.
Unai Emery’s men are in a strong position to finish in the Premier League’s top-four and secure a Champions League return.
But while defender Torres knows that will help improve the club’s financial position, he believes it is silverware which would leave the most lasting legacy.
Villa face Bologna in the Europa League quarter-finals as they aim to take another step toward ending a 30-year trophy drought.
Winning the competition would also secure a place in next season’s Champions League and Torres told Spanish newspaper Marca: “Ultimately, it's clear that qualifying for Europe is the best thing that could happen to the club to achieve stability.
“But the only thing people will truly remember is if we win a title.
“This year we have that opportunity; we're in the Europa League quarter-finals, a competition we really enjoy.
“Last year we reached the FA Cup semifinals and also the Conference semi-finals. We're right on the verge of a final, and hopefully, we can make it this year.”
Villa return to action on April 9 when they head to Italy and take on Bologna in the quarter-final first leg.
The current break is their longest between matches all season and they will be aiming to pick-up where they left off, after morale-boosting wins over Lille and West Ham.
Torres, who started both matches, said: “I was happy before this break, getting back to playing, and also advancing to the next round in the Europa League, which was very important for us to keep that competition alive until the end of the season.
“Now we face this break with a bit of peace of mind thanks to our recent home win against West Ham in the league.
“We're looking forward to it, being in Champions League positions for this final stretch and knowing that's the club's main objective.”
