Liverpool have been sternly advised not to sign Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven. Arne Slot's team are anticipated to bolster their defence this summer with Ibrahima Konate's contract expiring and Virgil van Dijk nearing 35.
A deal has already been pre-agreed for Jeremy Jacquet to sign from Rennes ahead of the 2026/27 season, but additional defensive reinforcements are still expected. Van de Ven has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield, but former striker Dean Saunders has cautioned Liverpool against signing him.
He told aceodds.com: "When speaking about Micky van de Ven, he is lightning quick, but I have played against defenders like him. I have played against the quickest centre backs in the world, but it was never a problem for me. Being a top defender is all about your brain.
"It doesn't matter being quick if you don't have the brain. It helps you recover from mistakes, but you shouldn't make those mistakes to start.
"We also saw the situation where he ignored Thomas Frank. I didn't like that situation. Yes, he is playing for a team who are struggling and keep selling their best players, but you can't behave like that."
It has been a disastrous season for Tottenham and Van de Ven, with relegation looming as they sit just one point above the bottom three, having failed to secure a Premier League victory in 2026. Interim head coach Igor Tudor, who has since left the club, managed to not lose just one of his five league games at the helm, with that solitary point coming against Liverpool earlier this month.
Tottenham are in advanced talks with Roberto De Zerbi, the former Brighton manager. De Zerbi has been offered a five-year contract to take charge.
That draw with Spurs was part of a six-match stretch where Liverpool only managed two victories, suffering losses against Wolves, Galatasaray and Brighton. The defeat to Brighton was particularly disheartening, leaving the champions in danger of missing out on a top-five finish.

They currently hold the last Champions League qualification spot but appear to be locked in a struggle with Chelsea, Everton and Brentford. However, Liverpool's victories over two of the teams they recently lost to have propelled them into the quarter-finals of both the FA Cup and Champions League.
Following the March international break, Liverpool will first face knockout matches in these competitions, with away games against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain looming.
