Liverpool showing ‘intense interest’ in Luis Suarez – no, not that one

Liverpool and Newcastle are both showing interest in Luis Suarez, but not the one you’re thinking of!

While the former Liverpool striker is still playing alongside Lionel Messi for Inter Miami, it is Sporting’s 28-year-old with whom the Reds have been linked.

The Colombian Suarez has already scored 33 goals as Sporting’s centre-forward this season, including five in the Champions League.

Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha report that Liverpool and Newcastle are preparing to go head-to-head to sign Suarez, with ‘intense interest’ shown.

The reliability of these reports should be questioned, especially given Liverpool already have two high-profile strikers and the Sporting man, whose contract runs until 2030, has a release clause of £70 million.

While the Reds’ priority should be wingers, if Liverpool are keen to move to a 4-2-2-2 formation then they could be in the market for another striker.

RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande is the most strongly-linked attacker at the moment, though a price tag of £86m could be deemed excessive given he has only been performing at a high level in Europe for nine months.

Who is Sporting’s Luis Suarez?

A clinical finisher, Suarez’s career hasn’t been a success story from the start but rather a tale of graft for which he is finally getting his rewards.

As a youngster, he joined Watford from Granada but didn’t make a single first-team appearance, instead returning to Spain on loan three times before eventually rejoining Granada permanently.

There, he spent two seasons, scoring 15 goals in 75 games before moving to Marseille for £8.5m in 2022.

His time in France was unsuccessful, though, and he played just 15 times before going back to Spain, Almeria taking a chance on the spritely striker.

It was there that he was noticed by Sporting after netting 27 times in 41 Segunda games last campaign.

Having won the Primeira Liga but lost Victor Gyokeres to Arsenal, Sporting replaced him with Suarez who cost just over £21m.

The 6’1″ forward fitted in immediately under Rui Borges, leading the line with the talented trio behind of Geny Catamo, Francisco Trincao and ex-Wolves youngster Pedro Goncalves.

We will get a better idea of how Suarez could fare in the Premier League when Sporting face Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.

While the reported interest makes a great headline and serves to excite, it is far from real evidence that a second Suarez could be landing in Liverpool any time soon!
