Sheffield Wednesday take Leeds United and Barnsley academy prospects on trial - report

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly taken youngsters from Leeds United, Barnsley and Lincoln City on trial.

In the closing stages of any season, it is fairly common for young players to feature as trialists for other academies.

This is often because they are not in line to receive a professional contract from their current club, but it can also be in the interest of simply lining up a fresh challenge or getting game time.

Regardless of the reason, the presence of trialists on teamsheets tends to get tongues wagging.

Sheffield Wednesday run rule over young trialists

According to The Star, Wednesday gave opportunities to a trio of trialists over the weekend.

The club’s under-18s were beaten 4-0 by Crewe Alexandra and a trio of new faces are thought to have been in the side.

17-year-old Leeds prospect Elton Simo, a midfielder, is among those who has been named as a trialist. He last featured for the Whites at under-18 level in February, making the most recent of his 11 appearances for the side this season.

It has also been claimed there were places in the team for Barnsley utility man Feyi Afuape and 18-year-old Lincoln City forward Daniel Vanderpuye.

New era on horizon at Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesday will be hoping they can unearth some gems in the coming months as they look to usher in a new era.

The Owls are League One-bound but hope is returning to S6 with progress on a takeover being made.
