Florian Wirtz opens up on support from Julian Nagelsmaan

Wirtz has grown as the season has progressed since signing from Bayer Leverkusen for over £116 million last summer.

His talent has never been doubted, but the 22-year-old wasn’t combining output with flair at the beginning of the campaign.

“It wasn’t an easy phase,” Wirtz told Sportschau about adapting to the Premier League.

“It’s sometimes good that things don’t always go upwards, and that you experience a dip and grow stronger because of it.

“That’s how I see it now as well, it has made me a bit stronger. I had to overcome resistance and adapt. I had to learn to become stronger and hold onto the ball.

“The coach (Germany manager Nagelsmann) always supported me during the difficult phase after my move to Liverpool and always had an open ear for me.

“He gave me tips and reassured me. That has brought us closer together.”

This is actually a very important day in the history of the club, as it was effectively when Liverpool Football Club was born in 1892.

John Houlding, along with William Barclay, John McKenna, and others, met at the Neptune Hotel in Clayton Square to draw up club rules.

The first rule, as per LFC History, was “that the club be called Liverpool Football Club and shall play under the Rules of the Football Association.”

A founding day, if you will, with the club not officially recognised until June 3.

It’s been quite the 134 years!
