Fresh transfer developments involving Nico Schlotterbeck have emerged overnight, with journalist Fabrizio Romano revealing that Borussia Dortmund are closing in on an agreement that could significantly impact interest from clubs such as Liverpool.
Schlotterbeck has been linked with several top European sides in recent months, particularly those looking to strengthen their defensive ranks.
However, Borussia Dortmund appear increasingly confident that the German centre-back will remain at the club, with negotiations over a new long-term contract now reaching their final stages.
According to Romano, discussions between Dortmund and Schlotterbeck’s representatives have progressed positively, with the framework of a new deal almost fully agreed.

The proposed contract would reportedly extend the defender’s stay until 2031 and include an improved salary package that would place him among the highest-paid defenders at the club, as well as one of the top earners among Bundesliga centre-backs.
Romano said on YouTube: “That verbal agreement between Nico Schlotterbeck’s agency and Borussia Dortmund is almost done – new contract valid until 2031, improved salary for Schlotterbeck (one of the best earners in Borussia Dortmund and one of the best earners for Bundesliga defenders.
“Also including a release clause from summer 2027, in excess of €60m–65m [£52m-56.4m].
“So everything is set to be completed between Schlotterbeck’s camp and Dortmund. What’s needed is the final green light from the player. Let’s see what it’s going to be… Borussia Dortmund are confident to keep the player.”
Despite the progress made in negotiations, the final decision still rests with the player himself. Schlotterbeck has yet to give his official approval, meaning the situation remains open until he provides the final green light to complete the agreement.
Release clause to be included in new Schlotterbeck contract with Dortmund
One detail that has drawn particular attention is the inclusion of a release clause within the proposed contract.
Reports indicate that the clause would become active from the summer of 2027, with a valuation believed to exceed €60 million. Such a provision could keep the player firmly on the radar of elite clubs, including those in England and Spain, even if he commits his future to Dortmund in the short term.
For Liverpool, this development presents a potential complication as the club continues to assess options to strengthen its defence.

Interest in Schlotterbeck has been mentioned previously, but Romano has suggested that Liverpool have not yet submitted any formal offer or taken decisive action regarding a transfer.
The Reds did reinforce their defensive department earlier in the year, bringing in a new centre-back during the winter window. However, injury concerns affecting defensive options could still influence the club’s recruitment plans heading into the summer.
For now, Dortmund remain optimistic that Schlotterbeck will commit his future to the club.
Should the deal be finalised, it would represent a significant step in securing defensive stability while also ensuring that any future transfer interest would require a substantial financial commitment.
