Could Mohamed Salah return to a ex-employer?

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is a surprise target for one of his former clubs.

After nine years at Liverpool, the Egypt international has announced that this season will be his final on Merseyside, having won just about every trophy available in almost a decade at the club.

It is believed that despite having a year left on his contract, Salah will walk away from Anfield as a free agent, too.

Ranked at no.5 in FourFourTwo's list of the greatest Premier League players of all time, Salah has had a monumental impact on English football and picking up the PFA Player of the Year in 2018, 2022 and 2025, as well as winning two league titles with the Reds.

But with manager Arne Slot looking to rejuvenate his team after spending over £400 million last summer, the 33-year-old has decided to seek pastures new – though that could see him return to a former club.

Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport have reported via Fichajes in Spain that Roma have begun an ambitious plan to bring the winger back to the Eternal City for a second spell at the Stadio Olimpico.

Salah initially joined the Gialorossi on loan from Chelsea 2015, but made the move permanent the following summer, netting a respectable 34 goals in all competitions across two campaigns.

This new report notes that the Saudi Pro League are interested in bringing Salah to the Middle East following long-standing interest, but with the winger having previously shunned advances before to remain in a competitive European league, there is hope from Italy that he could do so again, as “initial contacts have already been made to explore this possibility.”

Unfortunately for Roma, the Egyptian would simply have to choose nostalgia rather than financial incentive, with Gian Piero Gasperini's side unable to offer anything like the riches that either Saudi Arabia, Major League Soccer or Europe's elite could provide.

Kevin De Bruyne proved last summer that Serie A still had pulling power when he turned down the potentially more lucrative paydays for a spell with Napoli, and perhaps Roma wish to do the same – though that would be difficult, unless they qualify for the Champions League.

FourFourTwo understands, however, that the possibility of a Roma reunion for Salah is slim, albeit not impossible, with the richest sides on Earth all on high alert due to the nature of Salah's Anfield exit.

With the forward seemingly available for free, Salah may well attract far more attention than he otherwise could have, with big names looking to spend more on wages, given that they wouldn't have to spend big on a transfer fee.
