Craig Hope shares whether Newcastle's Dan Burn will go to the World Cup with England

It remains to be seen how many Newcastle United players actually go to the World Cup with England – but Craig Hope of The Daily Mail is hugely confident that Dan Burn will be one of them.

Of the six Newcastle United players who were named in the England squad for the final camp before this summer’s World Cup, Burn’s spot might actually be one of the most secure.

While surely not even Burn’s most ardent supporters would suggest he’s going to start for the Three Lions in the tournament, it seems as if there will indeed be a spot on the plane for him.

Burn set to be included in England’s final World Cup squad

England manager Thomas Tuchel enjoys working with Burn, and the German was the man who gave him his international debut back in March 2025 – just a few days after the defender scored in Newcastle’s victorious Carabao Cup final meeting with Liverpool.

Journalist Hope is strongly connected to both Newcastle and England and he wrote in The Daily Mail that Burn will go to the World Cup as a squad player.

That is despite fierce competition for places in central defensive areas.

On club form, one might argue that Harry Maguire should be ahead of Burn, who has struggled for Newcastle this season.

Then there’s the likes of Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones, Jarell Quansah, Trevoh Chalobah and Fikayo Tomori to consider.

It’s no doubt a brilliant story for Burn, who is one of the oldest England debutants in modern history.

Even going as a squad player is surely better than he ever could have imagined, and it seems Tuchel has been seriously impressed during their brief time together.

It remains to be seen whether the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes can join Burn on the plane.

Of that group, Gordon and Livramento feel the most likely at this stage, while Hall will hope to impress if he gets a chance against Japan on Tuesday.
