Transfer seen as sure thing as Leeds United look to fulfil star’s ‘dream of Premier League’

Hidemasa Morita

Leeds United have a clear opportunity to sign Hidemasa Morita, with the midfielder’s situation now aligning far more closely with what the club were looking for last year.

The Sporting CP player has been on Leeds United’s radarsince 2025. At the time, a move was considered but ultimately rejected. The asking price of around €10m (£8.7m), combined with doubts over his fitness, made the deal difficult to justify.

Twelve months on, both of those barriers have disappeared.

Morita is now approaching the end of his contract and is expected to leave Sporting this summer. That alone changes the financial equation. However, there is also a broader shift in how his situation is viewed, both by the player and within the market.

Exit now seen as inevitable

Sporting are already planning for life without Morita. The club’s midfield is set for major changes next season, with multiple departures expected and internal solutions being developed.

Morita’s case is the clearest. He has long indicated he will not renew his contract, and his exit is now treated internally as a certainty. That clarity allows the club to move forward with succession plans, rather than attempting to extend his stay.

At the same time, the player’s own priorities have not changed. A move to the Premier League has been a long-standing ambition, dating back to his early career in Japan.

That ambition is now colliding with the right contractual moment.

Conditions now favour Leeds United move

Hidemasa Morita’s situation looks very different compared to last summer. The financial risk has been removed, and concerns around his physical condition have eased during the current season.

This is where Leeds United re-enter the picture in a more meaningful way.

The club had already done the groundwork on the player. They were aware of his profile, his role at Sporting, and his suitability for English football. What stopped them previously was not a lack of interest, but the overall deal structure.

Now, with Morita available on a free transfer and showing greater physical reliability, the same move carries far less risk.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola reinforce that Leeds United remain interested and present the move as increasingly likely, with the midfielder pushing to fulfil his long-standing ‘dream’ of playing in the Premier League.

A deal that now aligns for all sides

The situation has evolved into one where all elements point in the same direction.

Sporting are ready to move on. Morita is determined to take the next step in his career. Leeds have prior interest and now face a far more favourable deal.

There is still time before the window opens, and other clubs could emerge. External factors, including international exposure ahead of the 2026 World Cup, may also influence the market.

Even so, this is no longer the uncertain scenario it once was. What Leeds United previously declined now looks like an opportunity reshaped – and one that may be much harder to ignore.
