Jamie Carragher gets into heated spat with Liverpool fans as old Mo Salah comments emerge

Jamie Carragher has gotten into another heated row with Liverpool fans after they called the former centre-back an ‘average’ player amid his recent Mohamed Salah controversy.

The footballer-turned-pundit sparked heavy backlash after ranking Salah only sixth on his list of Liverpool’s greatest ever players, behind names like Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish, amid the Egyptian’s impending departure at the end of the season.

Carragher’s ranking prompted Liverpool fans to revisit his own achievements at Anfield, with some concluding he was 'an average centre-back with outstanding moments'.

The comment drew attention from the Sky Sports pundit himself, who took to X to respond to the fresh criticism.

Writing on X, Carragher responded to a post calling him an ‘average’ footballer by pointing out that he remains only one of three Liverpool centre-backs named in the PFA Team of the Year, alongside Sami Hyypia and Virgil van Dijk.

He also addressed accusations of contradicting himself after an old video surfaced in which he described Salah as potentially one of the top three players in Liverpool history, alongside Gerrard and Dalglish.

Despite his earlier stance, the former Liverpool defender said he eventually ‘changed his mind’ on Salah amid off-field drama surrounding the Egyptian earlier this season.

In December, Salah went on an extraordinary outburst, accusing Liverpool of ‘throwing him under the bus’ amid his limited playing time under Arne Slot.

The Egyptian was briefly left out of the squad following his public comments, while last week he announced he will be departing the club at the end of the season.

Liverpool have already begun searching for Salah’s successor months ahead of his announcement, with the forward set to depart on a free transfer following an agreement to terminate his contract early.

Klopp Predicts Ekitike Could Break Salah Record

Amid Salah’s impending summer departure, Jurgen Klopp has broken his silence on the Egyptian’s decision to end his nine-year stint at Anfield.

While the former Liverpool manager acknowledged that it will be a difficult task for any player to match Salah’s tally of 255 goals for the club, he suggested that Hugo Ekitike could come close if he remains at Anfield over the next decade. The German told The Anfield Wrap:

“In the moment, when you work with him, the bigger view it’s ridiculous, just ridiculous, unmatched numbers, we may sit here in 10 years, maybe Ekitike [will break his record] but it will be difficult.

“One of the all time greats, definitely, will leave the club in the summer, and let’s see where he will show up next.”
