AC Milan's rumoured interest in Andy Robertson adds context to Celtic Champions League situation

AC Milan’s reported interest in Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has cast a stark light on Celtic’s current Champions League predicament.

With the Scotland captain’s contract expiring at Anfield this summer, his next move is being heavily debated, and Celtic have continually been mentioned in various reports.

But some interesting noise is emerging from Italy, with Calciomercato reporting on Milan’s interest in Robertson ahead of the summer transfer window re-opening.

It also noted how Celtic remains a ‘romantic’ option for Robertson, who is a boyhood fan, and he was in the ranks at Parkhead as a youngster before being released without making a first-team appearance.

You sense Milan rising again in Italy, and Celtic’s current situation in Glasgow, might just sway this ball into the court of the seven-time European Cup winners.

The crux of the issue lies in Celtic’s Champions League situation.

Back in August, Celtic’s failure to reach the Champions League was a bitter pill to swallow, and it caused mayhem across the board.

As things stand, the Hoops are, unfortunately, well on course to miss out entirely once again. This ongoing absence from Europe’s elite competition will have a severe effect, especially given the individuals who run Celtic’s ship.

Conversely, while Milan failed to make Europe altogether last season, they are now well on track to return to Europe’s premier competition.

That impending Champions League revenue could provide the Rossoneri with the crucial financial muscle needed to meet Robertson’s wage demands.

Furthermore, Robertson isn’t getting any younger. The allure of playing at the highest level of European football might heavily outweigh the romantic pull of Paradise, increasing the likelihood of a move to San Siro over Celtic.

Either way, a club the size of AC Milan being keen on Robertson proves he still has a massive amount left in his locker.

If Celtic somehow manage to pull off this transfer, they would be absolutely blessed to have him on board next season, alongside Kieran Tierney.
