Fresh injury blow for out-on-loan Leeds United star as international decision made

It's been a miserable season for Leeds United defender Max Wober.

Out-on-loan Leeds United defender Max Wober has been forced to withdraw from international duty amid ongoing injury issues.

Wober joined Werder Bremen on loan for the 2025/26 campaign in the summer but hasn’t played since making his debut in a DFB-Pokal defeat in August. A hamstring injury kept the 28-year-old out for four months and upon returning in a friendly against St. Pauli earlier this year, he suffered a setback.

Calf pain turned out to be a muscle fibre tear with tendon involvement and Wober was scheduled to see a specialist in London before the international break. His inclusion in the Austria squad for the March international break offered hope of an imminent return but reports now suggest an ongoing issue.

Austrian outlet Salzburger Nachrichten reported on Sunday that Wober had left his national team’s Vienna base ahead of their friendly against South Korea on Tuesday. The out-on-loan Leeds man wasn’t due to feature in that game but ‘has been suffering from muscle problems for some time’ and subsequently left the group.

The potential setback extends a miserable season for Wober, whose loan spell at Werder Bremen has not gone to plan whatsoever. The Austrian spoke about his fitness issues last month, admitting he still held out hope of contributing after the current international break.

“After the friendly match [vs St. Pauli], I started having problems with my calf,” he told the 1x1Sport Fußballtrainer podcast (via Deich Stube). “At first, they said it was a minor strain, but it took longer than expected. Then it turned into a muscle fibre tear, and finally a muscle fibre tear with tendon involvement. Many things didn’t go optimally during my rehab.

“I’m not far from being fit, but I still can’t get back to running and playing football completely pain-free. I hope this appointment will help me and that I can be back on the pitch in two weeks. Hopefully, after the international break, I’ll at least have five or six games where I can give my all for the club.”
