Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris: 'We need this kind of player'

The 24-year-old has started all but two of Sunderland's 31 Premier League games this season, and has played in a variety of positions.

As well as playing in his natural role at right-back, Hume has covered on the left side of the defence and played further forward in midfield.

While the Black Cats opted to overhaul their squad in the summer in preparation for their return to the Premier League, Le Bris was always confident Hume had what it took to flourish at the top level.

And the head coach was right. Hume has not only been a constant in the side for Sunderland, he wore the captain's armband in the absence of the injured skipper Granit Xhaka earlier this year.

And he helped Le Bris negotiate Sunderland's recent injury crisis when he moved over from the right-back to left while both Reinildo and Dennis Cirkin were unavailable.

Le Bris said: "He has a strong versatility. Left-back, right-back, right-winger, midfielder, probably centre-back - I don't know in the back four, I've never tried - but in n the back three, 100%.

"He's versatile and we need this kind of player."

During the African Cup of Nations, Hume was used regularly in an advanced role on the right side of midfield, and with the likes of Bertrand Traore, Nilson Angulo, Jocelin Ta Bi and Romaine Mundle all out injured, there's every chance he'll be asked to play in that position again before the season is out.

Asked what he likes about Hume in that wide midfield role, Le Bris said: "It was interesting. When we faced strong teams, away especially, sometimes we may expect that the majority of the game, the defensive phases, will go in deep blocks.

"With a right winger like Trai, it's easy to drop in a 5-4-1 naturally, organically. We can manage this right triangle really easily. With Trai in this position, it's a good principle.

"With the ball, because he's got this ability to manage different positions, he can play wide, he can play inside, he can play as a double pivot in the 10-pocket.

"For the opponent, you never know what position he will pick on the pitch. He can manage different positions really efficiently. This versatility is useful."
