Adam Aznou enjoys rare moment of joy for Morocco U23s amid Everton struggles

It’s safe to say that Adam Aznou’s move to Everton is yet to bear fruit – but last night he enjoyed a nice moment with the Morocco U23s.

Aznou joined Everton from Bayern Munich last summer, and hopes were fairly high that he would push Vitalii Mykolenko for minutes at left-back.

Arriving as a young player from a massive club such as Bayern was always going to mean a decent level of hype.

And also pressure, which potentially may have affected the youngster.

But that pressure appears to have been contained to behind the scenes, because Adam Aznou has only made one cameo appearance so far for Everton.

That came in the FA Cup in January, and fans have been surprised to see him disappear since that outing against Sunderland.

Last night though he got some minutes into his legs for the Morocco U23s.

Last night, the Morocco U23s took on Ivory Coast in a friendly match.

And the 19-year-old actually opened the scoring for his country in the 2-2 draw at the Complexe Mohammed VI de Football.

Aznou was played in, and shifted the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper. He then cut back inside to wrong-foot a recovering defender.

Showing good composure under pressure with two defenders back, Aznou rolled the ball into the far corner.

Footage of the goal can be seen on Aznou’s own Instagram Story.

With the game not being broadcast, information about the game is relatively thin on the ground.

However, Transfermarkt created a live blog for the game and interestingly, their graphics for the lineups show that Aznou actually lined up as a right winger.

Of course, Aznou is primarily a left-back, who can play further forward. We saw him play as a left winger when he came on against Sunderland.

But seemingly he has the capacity to play on the opposite side too.

Aznou could leave Everton this summer

So a rare moment of joy for Aznou, during what’s been a frustrating season for him.

Hopefully he’ll be able to build on this goal back at Everton, but his chances of getting minutes for the first-team don’t seem too strong at the moment.

Moyes’ view of Aznou was further cemented recently when he played Jarrad Branthwaite at left-back against Brighton and Manchester United.

Aznou has missed out of seven of Everton’s last eight Premier League matchday squads, showing he really is far out of the picture right now.

Currently, it feels likely that Aznou will leave Everton this summer on some kind of basis.

He will not want to waste any more time, so if nothing changes for him, he could well look to get out on loan or even try to leave permanently.
