Rob Edwards believes ‘super intelligent’ Angel Gomes has found a way to impact Premier League games.

The 25-year-old has been in and out of the team since making a deadline day loan move from Marseille, in a deal that sees Wolves hold a £6million option to buy.

He came off the bench at half-time to help Wolves to a comeback draw at Brentford and despite his diminutive frame in a physical Premier League, Edwards believes Gomes has the quality to make his mark.

"I think the Premier League is challenging for any player, never mind Angel, it's just difficult for anyone,” he said.

"He's got super intelligence, though, and is a brilliant technician. He finds a way.

"He speaks so many languages, Angel is really intelligent.

"If I could have that (versatility) with every single player that we're able to sign, I think it would be brilliant because that allows you to change in-game, maybe be a bit more flexible without having to make substitutions.

"You have a squad, but then if you have people missing with suspension or injuries, then obviously they can fill a number of roles as well. So I think for a couple of reasons, it's really key to have that.”

Wolves’ ability to attract the signing of England international Gomes came as a surprise to some, as the players sought more game time after struggling for an impact at Marseille.

"Our position in the league tells one side of the story, but it doesn't feel like that around the place,” Edwards added.

“It feels like we're trying to take the right steps to correct that and try and build momentum going forward and obviously into next season as well.

"The relationship that I've got with him, he trusts us as a football club to give him that opportunity in the right environment for him to try and play his best football.

"I think on both those sides, it shows us as a club in a positive light.

"Sometimes, for our careers, we all have to take a risk, but we believe it's the right thing for our career going forward. He would have had to have done that a few times.”
