Newcastle United are facing challenges with spending rules and may have to sell players to replenish their squad in the summer transfer window.
Newcastle United could reportedly be forced to sell Anthony Gordon this summer amid Liverpool’s previous interest.
According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are facing issues when it comes to Premier League and European spending rules. Despite selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a British record fee of £125 million, it is suggested that Newcastle ‘do not have the scope many expected to reinvest in the squad’ ahead of the summer transfer window.
Eddie Howe’s side spent £250 million on six players last summer. In addition, they face missing out on Champions League qualification, having reached the last 16 this season, and have a battle to be either the Europa League or Europa Conference League next term.
Should Newcastle fail to book their spot in Europe’s elite club competition then ‘only a significant sale or sales would free up funds for transfer outlay and wages’.
Sandro Tonali is one player who could be sold to raise funds but Gordon is another. In the summer of 2024, Liverpool were close to signing the winger when Newcastle face an issue with Premier League profit and sustainability rules. Reports suggested that Gordon, who came through Everton’s ranks, told England team-mates while away at Euro 2024 that he was joining his boyhood club.
Speaking on the failed move, Gordon previously said: "It was difficult for me because one, I had the Euros, which was horrendous for me mentally. I was there, I wasn’t playing.
"Then I had the transfer stuff. With PSR, I thought I was going to leave at some point in the window. It didn’t happen. I had to get my head around that to begin with, and then to get my head around it again was hard. I’m a human being.”
Liverpool are set to be in the market for a new winger this summer, with Mo Salah confirming he will leave at the end of the season. However, Gordon would not be a direct replacement as Salah operates off the right flank, while Gordon favours the opposite wide.
In addition, the Reds could want more competition on the left wing for Cody Gakpo, who has endured his struggles this term. Liverpool do have Rio Ngumoha, who is a bona fide first-team member, but he is still only. Ngumoha has shown he is capable of playing on both flanks.
