Castello Lukeba“on the market” as price tag set to drop below release clause

Liverpool are believed to hold some form of interest in RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old left-footed centre-back came through the famous academy at Olympique Lyon before making his senior breakthrough at the club.

He impressed enough at the Groupama Stadium to earn a £26 million move to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023, where he has gone on to establish himself as one of the most consistent defenders in the Bundesliga.

The Frenchman – who stands at 184cm – has already surpassed 100 combined appearances in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, and has also featured across 18 Champions League and Europa League games. This season alone, he has made 22 league starts, registered 177 tackles won, and boasts a top speed of 34.29 km/h.

Sport Witness reported last week that Liverpool, alongside Arsenal and Manchester United, are showing interest in the defender. Lukeba is thought to be open to a move to the Premier League.

And if Liverpool want to move for the defender, it seems that a deal is there to be struck.

Philipp Hinze of Sky Sports Germany has reported that both Leipzig and Lukeba feel like a transfer could happen this summer, and that the Bundesliga side are open to selling for around €65-70m – below the release cause of €80m.

“Castello Lukeba is on the market this summer. Leipzig and Lukeba both feel that their time together could come to an end after three years.

“The Bundesliga club is open to a departure, even below the release clause set at €80m. Understand that Leipzig values the Frenchman at €65-70m. Lukeba is ready for a new challenge. It now depends on the offers that come in. There are strong indications that he could leave Leipzig this summer.”

Whether Liverpool can get this deal over the line before Arsenal or United make their move remains to be seen. Meanwhile, with Giovanni Leoni set to return to action next season, and Jacquet arriving in June, perhaps the club will decide another young defender is not necessary.

But one thing is clear: Castello Lukeba is not short of admirers and he will be one to watch his coming summer.
