“Last thing we need” – Aston Villa star accused on nonchalance, needs to cut it out quickly

Youri Tielemans

Aston Villa star Youri Tielemans has been warned to buck up his ideas for Belgium after a disastrous showing in the 5-2 defeat to the USA.

The criticism comes from Het Belang van Limburg and analyst Justien Odeurs, who didn’t hold back when assessing the moment this week.

Tielemans was introduced from the bench against the USA, but his cameo was not an impressive one.

With Belgium already facing a chaotic, goal-heavy defeat, Senne Lammens played the ball into Tielemans in the penalty area. The Aston Villa midfielder hesitated for a split second, long enough for the USA to pounce and make it 2-5.

“Purely due to Youri Tielemans’ nonchalance’

For a player of the 28-year-old’s pedigree and experience, it was an uncharacteristic lapse, to say the least.

For Odeurs, it was a worrying sign ahead of the World Cup. She did not hold back when assessing the moment in Het Belang van Limburg.

“Gifts of a goal like the one we conceded against Team USA are the last thing we need at the World Cup,” she said.

“That second goal conceded was purely due to Youri Tielemans’ nonchalance. We should expect a bit more focus from someone with his track record.

“Even though it was ‘only’ a friendly. Those kinds of things need to be ironed out so we can go to the World Cup with peace of mind.”

Agent comments backfire

What makes the matter worse for Youri Tielemans is that the mistake comes after comments from his agent last week.

Questions had been raised about the Aston Villa star’s involvement in this break given he’s not long returned from a period out injured.

Bob Claes, his agent, responded to these questions, insisting Tielemans was determined to be a part of the group as he sets standards as captain.

“Youri sets the bar high,” he said.

“In terms of standards and values. In terms of work ethic. And in terms of intelligence. A dream to work with. Youri constantly seeks improvements but is also open to dialogue.”

A wake-up call before the World Cup

Those comments now look a little unfortunate in hindsight. Youri Tielemans’ quality is unquestioned, but with competition for midfield places intensifying, mistakes like this one become magnified.

Belgium won’t be panicking just yet. But they will be expecting more from their captain and Premier League star before the World Cup this summer.

If he is the one setting the tone, as his agent stated, this is not the one he was aiming for, that’s for sure.
