Many Leeds United fans complained about some of the summer signings by the 49ers. While the ownership wanted to improve the team, some of the fanbase were not really impressed.

Leeds passing on big names like Callum Wilson and Rodrigo Muniz just to sign Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on free transfers was not a good move. It was later as the window went on that it was explained that PSR restricted them from bringing in a marquee name at the center forward positions.

When Calvert-Lewin officially signed, Leeds fans complained about his injury record and the reported wages he was on. But as the season went on, the 49ers’ gamble seemed to have paid off.

Thomas Tuchel explains Dominic Calvert-Lewin absence

Not many clubs were interested in signing the former Everton man off the back of his last season. Leeds United went all in and signed him on a mult-year deal, seeing him as the man to lead their attack. And after an impressive goalscoring run to end last year, his name was in the news for a potential England re-call.

Thomas Tuchel took the bold step to call up the striker for the March international break. The England boss made it clear that the team was looking for a player to serve as a backup for Harry Kane. Calvert-Lewin had just over 30 minutes in the game against Uruguay last Friday. When he came on, he missed a glorious opportunity that everyone remembered after the game.

This week, the Leeds star and some other England players were sent back to their clubs. Many thought this was because they failed to impress Tuchel, but the German cleared the air: “It’s the reality of the season, the reality of the end of March, the reality of players involved in more than one competition,”

“We have players in camp that have already played more minutes than last season, so there is some concern.”

Those players were sent back to their clubs because they needed rest, with a tough schedule towards the end of the season.

Leeds United star can still make the World Cup

Thomas Tuchel has now opened the door for Calvert-Lewin to make the World Cup squad. The Leeds United star is still in contention to make the team as the backup for Harry Kane. England really need alternatives to the Bayern Munich star, and this season, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has found himself firmly in the race. His first 30 minutes back in an England jersey were not the greatest, but it does show promise.

Now, the striker can focus on scoring more goals between now and the start of the season to convince Thomas Tuchel. His best way into the England squad is to continue playing well and finding the back of the net.
