Leeds United flop has escape chance – May spend single season with Whites

German side FC Köln are planning a second attempt to sign Sebastiaan Bornauw this summer after Leeds United blocked a move in the January transfer window.

BILD report on the defender today and Köln’s intention to try for a loan deal in the summer transfer window.

Leeds United spell fizzles out

Sebastiaan Bornauw joined Leeds United last summer from Wolfsburg with expectations of becoming a long-term pillar in their backline. The move, though, has never taken off.

This season he’s managed just four starts in the Premier League, with his last appearance coming on 10th February in the 2-2 draw at Chelsea. He’s currently on a five-match run without making an appearance.

BILD report that Bornauw feels the transfer has ‘definitively flopped’. He is frustrated with the situation and the search for a fresh start is picking up pace.

Köln push for reunion

Köln are keen on their former player. Sporting director Thomas Keler is actively hunting a left-sided centre-back who is aggressive, dominant in the air and a threat from set pieces.

Sebastiaan Bornauw ticks every box. He already proved it during his first spell at the club. He was a fan favourite there thanks to his physical style.

Köln tried to do a deal in January and Bornauw gave the green light to the move. But Leeds eventually blocked it as they needed Bornauw for cover at the time.

Now other players have returned; he’s back out of the picture. That means a deal is back on the table.

The catch – Only a loan deal possible

The problem is that Köln can only afford a loan deal. Sebastiaan Bornauw’s Premier League wages and the fact he’s tied to Leeds United until 2029 rule out a permanent move.

But Köln are ready to move, and crucially Bornauw already gave his approval. That’s a major hurdle already cleared. Now they need to convince Leeds on the deal.

They would presumably prefer to try and recoup the €6m they paid for the defender in the summer. However, if that is not on offer, they may be best served getting what they can. Köln are certainly ready to make a second attempt.
