“A fly without a head” – Liverpool player slated in home country… ‘nothing special’

Liverpool defender Milos Kerkez has been slated in his native Hungary, where he’s been described as a “a fly without a head”.

The criticism comes from former Maribor star Mitja Viler via Ekipa. He was a left-back himself and is deeply unimpressed by the Liverpool full-back.

Viler is known for never sugar-coating his opinions on players, and the 22-year-old Liverpool man found himself in the firing line during Viler’s appearance on Pod prečko.

“Kerkez is nothing special”

Discussing Slovenia’s match against Hungary in Budapest, Viler singled out the Hungary star, and he didn’t hold back.

Despite Milos Kerkez being a regular at Liverpool this season following a €46.9m move from Bournemouth last summer, Viler sees nothing remarkable.

“Kerkez is nothing special to me,” he said.

“It’s true that he plays in my position. Incredible dynamics, but he’s a fly without a head. In our championship, Kerkez would go unnoticed, we would immediately clean him up.”

Even Liverpool status doesn’t sway him

Viler is not convinced by the fact Milos Kerkez plays for Liverpool either.

Kerkez has 39 appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season, replacing Andy Robertson as first choice left-back at Anfield.

That, though, doesn’t change his compatriot’s beliefs. Instead, he thinks the price the Reds paid is a determining factor.

“Let’s not talk about club football now,” he added.

“I think he plays for Liverpool because they bought him for so much money, Robertson’s contract is expiring. For better or worse, they are sticking with Kerkez.”

A controversial opinion?

Whether Viler’s opinion will cause outrage at Anfield, though, is up for debate. Liverpool fans are certainly divided on the summer transfer.

His first season at Liverpool has hardly been the perfect one. Kerkez has certainly not shone as much as he did at Bournemouth, that’s for sure.

But there is an acceptance that he’s a long-term project with a very high ceiling. And his performances have improved in recent months after a rocky start too. He’s even been defended in Hungary as well.

They, perhaps, are taking a more measured approach than Viler. The Hungarian is utterly unconvinced if these comments are anything to go by.
