Transfer approach looms for Leeds United ace signed in July – Agreement collapsed in January

Leeds United’s fight to stay in the Premier League will have a vital say on transfer policy this summer. Who stays and who leaves depends on league status, for sure.

Seven league games, plus an FA Cup quarter-final remain for Daniel Farke this season at Elland Road. The main objective is survival from relegation. Meanwhile, also achieving a trip to Wembley would make for a tremendous season.

Beyond that, Leeds have plenty of decisions to make once again on how to shape the squad for potential consolidation in the top flight.

German club FC Koln already eyeing Sebastiaan Bornauw transfer eight months on from Leeds United arrival

Sebastiaan Bornauw joined Leeds from Wolfsburg as one of the first additions following our promotion to the Premier League.

The towering Belgian was always seen as someone to provide decent cover to the centre-back contingent, and his role has been as expected.

Now, Sport Bild report that the £5million signing from back in July is already attracting interest from FC Koln, who are looking to bring him back to Germany.

Koln sit two points outside the relegation playoff places in the Bundesliga. And, their interest stretches back to the January window.

It’s claimed in the above report that Koln reached an agreement in principle to sign Bornauw during January. But, a deal feel through due to Leeds’ lack of options at centre-back.

Bornauw’s role as deputy has seen him fill in more often in 2026 than previously. That’s due to the change in formation to a back three, where he’s been required to cover for Jaka Bijol and others through injury.

Will Leeds United sell Sebastiaan Bornauw so soon after signing him for £5million?

I’m sure Bornauw knew that he was coming to Leeds as a backup to our starting options. So, having to wait for his opportunity shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Do I think he’s done enough to warrant staying? I think it’s hard to say. He had to wait a long time, but when he’s played as a basic centre-back in the middle of our defence, he’s done reasonably well. Away to Liverpool being one of his standouts.

However, I don’t think Farke’s done him many favours in games where he’s been asked to play almost as a wing-back a la Joe Rodon. That’s not Bornauw’s game. Nor was going man-for-man at Chelsea with Joao Pedro or Cole Palmer, he was set up to fail there.

I think for £5million as a squad signing, he’s been fine.

Do I think he’ll leave? It depends on the offer. If Koln come in with a bid that allows us to make profit, while offering assurances of starts, I’d imagine Bornauw and the club being tempted to agree.
