Wayne Rooney has waxed lyrical about Pickford this season following another incredible campaign for the 32-year-old.

Despite the loss, it was another quiet evening between the sticks for the Everton number one at Wembley.

“Not much he could do on Japan’s goal but made fine stop with his legs,” said John Cross of The Mirror.

Pickford only had one save to make throughout the game, but he also found himself picking the ball out of his net once.

“Japan’s opening goal was the first time Pickford had conceded for England in 922 minutes. He had to produce a smart save in the second half to keep the hosts in the game,” said BBC Sport.

With 38 touches of the ball, Pickford was able to record a 77% pass accuracy at Wembley Stadium.

London World gave Pickford an 8/10, saying: “No errors to put his position as number one into jeopardy. Distribution was decent without Harry Kane to aim at and made a superb save early in the second half after O’Reilly was beaten.”

James Garner handed a 20 minute cameo

Tuchel was impressed with Garner against Uruguay and the Everton midfielder has made a strong impression in training.

He did not make it back-to-back starts under the German, but he did come on after 70 minutes to replace Kobbie Mainoo.

Garner was once again trusted to take the corner kicks following his arrival onto the pitch.

Another positive showing from the 25-year-old for his country.
