Alexander Isak is set to return to full training this week, with the Liverpool striker nearing a comeback after four months out with a broken leg.

The 26-year-old has made steady progress since suffering a fractured fibula and ankle damage while scoring in December’s 2-1 win over Tottenham.

Initially expected back in late March or early April, Isak is now on track to rejoin team training at the AXA Training Centre. “I am just as excited as the fans to have him back because it is fair to say that in 90 percent of our games we’ve had more chances than the other team,” Arne Slot told reporters earlier this month.

“If we had one of the best strikers in the world playing then that would have usually meant that we would have had more points.

“I don’t want to downgrade it too much because I think he can have an impact when he is back, but it is more realistic to expect [100 percent] from him next season than against Man City or PSG.”

He was not included in Sweden’s squad for their 2026 FIFA World Cup play-off matches. Sweden, however, secured qualification for the World Cup with a dramatic 3-2 win over Poland in their European play-off final on Tuesday night.

Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres scored a late winner to seal victory, forcing the ball over the line in the 88th minute after a goalmouth scramble.

Anthony Elanga had opened the scoring with a superb strike before Nicola Zalewski equalised for Poland. Gustaf Lagerbielke restored Sweden’s lead just before halftime, but Karol Swiderski made it 2-2 early in the second half.

Gyokeres ultimately proved decisive with his late goal. The result confirms Sweden’s first World Cup appearance since reaching the quarter-finals in 2018, having failed to qualify in 2022.

They booked their place in the final by beating Ukraine 3-1 in the semi-final and will now compete in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia.

After the game, Isak took to Instagram to express his delight. He posted on his Instagram story: “JAAAAAA! J***A LEGENDER ALLIHOPA!💙💛💙💛”
