He looks finished at Elland Road: £12m Leeds star is fast becoming the new Tyler Adams - opinion

Regardless of whatever division Leeds United find themselves in next campaign, manager Daniel Farke will find himself in charge of adding further quality to the senior ranks.

The Whites currently sit four points clear of the relegation zone with just seven games to go, with their Premier League destiny still remaining firmly in their own hands.

If the club are to remain in the top-flight ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, his side will need to secure vital points in the final few games that remain this term.

The summer transfer window will present an opportunity for the hierarchy to build on their return to the division, with numerous areas still needing to be reinforced.

However, sales are also expected at Elland Road this summer, with one player appearing to be edging closer to the exit door ahead of the upcoming window.

Why Perri could be sold by Leeds this summer

During the summer or 2025, Leeds completed the £14m signing of goalkeeper Lucas Perri from Lyon, with real hope that he could become the club’s new number one.

The 28-year-old has ultimately struggled to meet the demands of the Premier League, as seen by his tally of 16 games played in the top-flight after his transfer.

He’s also been culpable for numerous glaring errors that have cost the side in key moments, resulting in the Brazilian losing his number one shirt under Farke.

Perri has not featured in a Premier League game since the 4-3 defeat against Newcastle United, with his only outings since coming in the FA Cup.

Karl Darlow has since been installed as the Whites’ number one over the last few weeks, with the Welsh international subsequently starting the last ten games in a row.

As a result, it appears likely that the hierarchy could cash in on his services after just one season at Elland Road to avoid losing a fortune on their £14m investment.

The Leeds star who’s now becoming the next Adams

Players spending just one season on the books at Leeds hasn’t been uncommon in recent years, as seen with American midfielder Tyler Adams, who left the club in 2023.

The 27-year-old arrived from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig just a year prior, but was unable to prevent the Whites from dropping into the Championship during his only year in Yorkshire.

He racked up a total of 28 appearances across all competitions, with injuries often preventing the deep-lying playmaker from making the desired impact at Elland Road.

Adams would subsequently leave to join Bournemouth for a fee in the region of £20m three years ago, leaving a huge role at the heart of the club’s midfield.

Leeds United's most expensive sales of all time

However, a handful of years on, Farke and the Whites appear to have their next version of the American, in the form of summer addition Sean Longstaff.

The Englishman arrived from Newcastle United for a reported £12m during the summer window, hoping to provide needed Premier League experience and quality to the heart of the side.

The 28-year-old has only managed to feature in 17 league games to date, often being an impact player and failing to cement his place as a regular starter.

Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach have been Farke’s go-to options in the midfield department in recent months, subsequently confining Longstaff to a place on the bench.

He’s failed to appear in any of the club’s last four league games, with his last Premier League start for the Whites coming way back at the end of November.

Longstaff has been a regular for the club in the FA Cup, but ultimately, he will be disappointed with his lack of league action - which could lead to a summer exit.

Should any sale happen, he would emulate Adams in departing the club after just one year in Yorkshire, subsequently being the next player to fail to live up to expectations at the club.

His lack of action over the last couple of weeks is evidence that Farke no longer sees the Englishman as a key first team member - which too could open the door to a summer exit.

The £12m fee paid for his signature may have looked like a bargain at the time, but it could see the club lose a chunk on their investment if they were to sell him.

If the club were to stay in the Premier League beyond this season, selling Perri and Longstaff should be a must - with the players evidently not at the level required in England’s top-flight.
