Newcastle United issue official St James' Park expansion & £200m training ground 'update' -…

Newcastle United have issued further communication regarding the future of St James’ Park and the club’s training ground.

Newcastle United have once again been unable to provide a significant update on the future of St James’ Park or the club’s Darsley Park training ground.

Since the 2021 PIF-led takeover, the future of St James’ Park has been a hotly debated topic. A potential expansion or new-build stadium has been explored by the club at length, but progress has been limited.

There has been more tangible progress when it comes to the training ground, however. Newcastle are actively looking to move away from its current Darsley Park site in the future.

Newcastle United approve £200m training ground budget

Last year, our sister title NewcastleWorld exclusively revealed that a £200million budget had been approved for a new state-of-the-art training ground to be built. It has also been suggested that the club have looked at a large site in Woolsington that was most recently owned by former Newcastle owner Sir John Hall as a potential training complex location.

Back in December, Newcastle chief executive officer David Hopkinson outlined the club’s ambition to move to a new training ground in the future. Renovations have been taking place at the current site over the past few years - The Gazette understands around £30million has been invested into the training ground since the takeover.

“When you look at the facility you have today, let’s talk straight with each other, it’s probably a seven out of 10,” Hopkinson admitted. “It gets the job done. I don’t think we have a lot of world-class talent that say, ‘I want to stay here because of the training ground’ or ‘I want to go to Newcastle because of the training ground’.

“Even with the renovation we’re doing, which will make it better, we probably only get to an eight. We don’t get to a 10. We can’t get to a 10 on the current footprint, which is the reason why we’re planning a very big investment to go and build a 10.

“Those are the investments we’re going to have to make to get to a world-class level.”

Newcastle United issue St James’ Park and training ground latest

Newcastle issued its first official update on the training ground and stadium in 2026 as part of the club's accounts announcement.

The official document submitted to Companies House on Tuesday, March 31 read: “The Group is further exploring the options in relation to potential enhancement of expansion of St James' Park or the development of a new stadium.

“Work continues to determine the preferred way forward in relation to the clubs' training infrastructure.”

Hopkinson was then asked to expand on these limited updates, to which he said on the training ground: “We are not ready to make an announcement on the training ground today.”

On the stadium, which was revealed to have been sold by the club to its subsidiary, PZ Holdings Ltd for a profit of £133.2million in the club accounts, Hopkinson added: “We are not ready to make any decisions.

“[Training ground] is closer. I understand the frustration, I really do. I'm going to reiterate something we've said before, but it's so important.

“So much of what needs to occur needs to occur quietly and in the background. Frankly, some of it is not tremendously exciting as we work through a scenario plan.

“Reorganising the company's ownership [regarding the stadium] to give us strategic optionality is absolutely brilliant. Not necessarily headline news.

“What I can tell you and reassure you is that every day we work on this quietly as we think through and plan the best outcome for this club.”
