Player on way back to Leeds United – Bargain price can’t even convince club

Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen are ‘rather unlikely’ to sign Isaac Schmidt on a permanent basis from Leeds United this summer, despite a €3m clause to do so.

DeichStube report that the German club currently have little interest in signing the left-back on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

The website explains that Werder currently have seven players on loan, five of which included clauses to make their moves permanent. No decisions over them have been yet, as the focus is on avoiding relegation.

But planning for next season is underway regardless. Initial indications are that several of the loan players won’t be joining next season. Schmidt is one of them.

Loan from Leeds doesn’t work out

He joined from Leeds in the summer but has only seen ‘sporadic’ playing time so far. Most of his 16 appearances have come from the bench. Other players are currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

Bremen had pursued the 26-year-old for a while and made the move due to long term absences for Olivier Deman and Mitchell Weiser. But the reality is that he has not impressed.

And while the club’s management appreciates his versatility, it is ‘rather unlikely’ that they will exercise a €3m option to buy him. Instead, Schmidt will be sent back to Elland Road.

Summer exit likely

What happens to Isaac Schmidt after that remains to be seen. He and Leeds will surely look for a permanent exit given his experience so far.

Schmidt only managed 14 appearances in all competitions last season under Daniel Farke and was clearly not a part of his Premier League plans either. That’s unlikely to have changed after a disappointing season in Germany.

Given Leeds only paid €2.5m for him, his asking price shouldn’t cause any potential suitors problems. He’s currently rated at €2.2m by Transfermarkt.

Werder Bremen don’t want him either way. So perhaps Schmidt and his team should start planning now.
