Jeremie Frimpong new injury nightmare: Subbed after 13 minutes for Netherlands

Jeremie Frimpong is facing another spell on the sidelines after being forced off after just 13 minutes in Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Ecuador on Tuesday night.

Frimpong replaced Cody Gakpo at half-time in Tuesday’s friendly only to then need to come off before the hour mark with a suspect muscle injury.

The 25-year-old was visibly frustrated as he exited the pitch and manager Ronald Koeman told reporters after the game: “That was a blow.”

While the extent of Frimpong’s injury is as yet unknown it is obviously a concern for Liverpool ahead of a pivotal run of fixtures – and for the player himself in a severely disrupted campaign.

He has already suffered three separate hamstring issues since joining from Bayer Leverkusen and missed a total of 19 games for his club.

That has not only stalled his progress at Anfield but also impacted Arne Slot‘s options, with Conor Bradley also out for the season with a serious knee injury.

It has often meant Dominik Szoboszlai filling in at right-back, which could again be the case when Liverpool visit Man City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.

Joe Gomez is also available and has not been involved with England during the international break, as is the case with Curtis Jones who is considered an emergency option.

If Szoboszlai does move back to defence it would limit Slot’s setup in midfield, with the No. 8 clearly more effective further forward.

But the overriding concern comes with Frimpong, whose ongoing fitness issues will be a worry for those who sanctioned his £29.5 million move to Merseyside last summer.

Touted as a long-term replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold as well as cover for Mohamed Salah on the right wing, he has only managed to play 1,344 minutes across all competitions this season.

There could be fears over his mobility after frequent hamstring injuries, particularly for a player who relies so heavily on his blistering pace.

Liverpool supporters are likely to hear an update on Frimpong’s injury when Slot holds his pre-Man City press conference on Friday morning.

He could also provide the latest on the likes of Salah, Alisson and Federico Chiesa, along with Alexander Isak who is slated to return to team training later this week.
