Sandro Tonali agent transfer plan backfires as Newcastle United claim small victory

Sandro Tonali’s agent set a post-World Cup deadline on the midfielder’s Newcastle United future when speaking to the press last month.

Italy crashed out of the World Cup at the qualifying stage for the third consecutive time last night.

And as Gli Azzurri tears flowed around the Bilino Polje Stadium, Newcastle United - not that Sandro Tonali saw the silver lining - claimed a small victory. Recent months have seen the 25-year-old’s future dominate the news agenda at St James’ Park.

As reported by The Gazette last week, Tonali’s camp believe they will be allowed to leave Newcastle this summer. Toon CEO David Hopkinson vowed earlier this week that any player heading for a St James’ Park exit will do so on the club’s terms.

Italy crash out

Tonali’s focus has been on securing a strong end to Newcastle’s season and qualifying for the World Cup. However, the latter part of that plan went up in smoke last night.

The four-time world champions were stunned to lose on penalties against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Italy took the lead through Moise Kean and appeared destined to win until Alessandro Bastoni’s red card before half-time.

This gave the hosts momentum in extra time as they pushed for a winner. Ultimately, the tie was decided by penalties, with Tonali the only Italian to score from 12 yards.

What Italy exit means for Newcastle United

Last month, Tonali’s agent, Beppe Riso, told Italian media that his future will be decided after the World Cup. In comments that will infuriate Newcastle fans, he also claimed a move to Manchester City or Arsenal is very likely.

“That was the aim from the moment he went to England - to try and turn him into a star player,” Riso said. “I think he’s the Italian player with one of the highest values in the world. I don’t know (whether he will join Man City or Arsenal) but it’s very likely.

“Everyone is waiting for the World Cup. Then a thousand scenarios will unfold, but it all kicks off after the World Cup.”

Unfortunately for him, those transfer plans will now need to be revisited. But for Newcastle, Italy’s exit should be considered a small victory.

Toon chiefs are keen to avoid another Alexander Isak saga that dragged on all summer. With Tonali no longer competing in North America, should he wish to leave, the best course of action would be to sanction a deal early.
