Opinion: Rico Lewis shares Harrison Armstrong trait David Moyes would love, amid Everton…

John Stones once gave a verdict about Rico Lewis that suggests David Moyes would love to sign the youngster for Everton.

It’s been claimed that Lewis has become a target for the Toffees ahead of the summer transfer window.

Everton are reportedly prioritising a new right-back in the next window, having mostly played Jake O’Brien and James Garner there this season. Neither player is a natural option, although both have done well filling in.

It is surely high time for a new option. And Lewis is an intriguing new link for Everton.

He has fallen by the wayside at Manchester City in recent times, with Matheus Nunes emerging as the clear number one choice at right-back.

But Lewis remains a player with high potential – and what John Stones said about him previously indicates David Moyes would really love him.

Stones knows Lewis very well, and a couple of years ago he dropped a great verdict about Lewis, calling him a ‘sponge’ for the way he easily absorbs new information.

He said (via mancity.com): “I think when we have played or in training when we have trained with him [Lewis], it is about him learning the roles off the manager and learning what the manager wants from him.

“Then it is about us fine tuning what we have learnt over the years of playing. He has been really good at taking that advice and giving everything.

“As a young lad that is all you can do, just keep being a sponge by taking everything in, learning as much as you can and enjoying the experience.”

This is interesting to consider, because we know that Moyes really likes when a player can absorb information.

Moyes is very fond of Harrison Armstrong, and said of the youngster back in February: “Probably the biggest compliment I could give Harrison is his ability to take on information and understand roles (is good). He doesn’t always get it right, but he’s someone you give information and I feel as if he can do it, or attempt to do it.”

Harrison Armstrong himself has also said he is ‘like a sponge’ around Moyes (via Liverpool Echo). And clearly this has benefitted him, with the youngster making 11 Premier League appearances since being recalled from his loan, including six starts.

So the chances are, Moyes would likely love having Lewis in his squad.

And given his ability to also be comfortable in midfield areas, there is every chance we could be seeing the Toffees make a push to sign the 21-year-old this summer.
