Leeds United star explains his lack of minutes with National Team was due to injury

Leeds United star Noah Okafor’s return to the Switzerland squad this month raised eyebrows, but his absence on the pitch tells a far more controlled story.

Okafor was back in the fold after a well-documented fallout with Switzerland boss Murat Yakin, yet he did not play a single minute against Norway or Anton Stach’s Germany.

For a player returning from exile, that has immediately sparked questions. Why recall him at all if he was not going to be used? But, Okafor has now explained the reason for his lack of action.

Okafor’s relationship with Switzerland boss Murat Yakin

The context matters here. Okafor’s relationship with Yakin broke down after Euro 2024, when the forward went over the manager’s head to speak directly to Swiss FA director Pierluigi Tami about his game time.

This is difficult: Who is Leeds United’s best signing so far? 🤑

That is not a minor disagreement. It is a direct challenge to authority. It has resulted in a two-year hiatus from the Switzerland squad. Yet despite that, Okafor was brought back into the squad.

That alone tells you the situation has cooled. Managers do not recall players they have no intention of involving. This was the first step towards reintegration, not a token gesture.

Okafor explains lack of minutes with Switzerland after recall

Okafor himself has been clear on why he did not feature. Writing on Instagram after the international break, he said the decision was made jointly with the coaching staff.

“Of course, I would have liked to have played too, but so soon after my injury we decided together not to take any risks,” the £18m Leeds signing said following Switzerland’s 0-0 draw with Norway last night.

That lines up with the available data. Okafor has been dealing with a hamstring issue in recent months, and the timing of this camp came shortly after his return to fitness.

Switzerland were not in a position where they needed to push him. These were not tournament matches. There was no reason to gamble on a player still building back to full sharpness.

This was about reintegrating Noah Okafor, not playing him

The key detail is that Okafor was involved. He trained, he travelled, and he rejoined the group after a period of tension. That matters more than whether he played 20 minutes off the bench.

At club level, he is still working to establish consistency. Okafor has scored four goals in 24 Premier League appearances for Leeds United this season, with no assists. Across all competitions, he has four goals and one assist in 27 games.

Those are respectable numbers, but they do not demand immediate international selection. He is not currently a player Switzerland have to force into the side regardless of circumstances.

That context makes the decision easier to understand. There was no urgency to throw him straight back in, especially with fitness still a consideration.

Instead, Switzerland have taken a measured approach. Get him back in the environment. Rebuild trust. Protect his fitness. Minutes can come later.

Punishment for Okafor? Or has Yakin finally forgiven Leeds star

It is easy to frame Okafor’s absence as a lingering consequence of his fallout with Yakin. The history is there, and it was significant. But the facts point in a different direction.

He was recalled. He was involved. And by his own admission, the decision not to play was mutual and linked to his physical condition. That is not how you treat a player you are freezing out.

Okafor himself struck a positive tone, thanking the national team and adding that he hopes to be back again very soon. That final line matters. It suggests the door is open, not closing.

For now, this looks exactly what it is. A controlled return after injury and tension, handled carefully rather than rushed.
