It is something that has mystified Arne Slot.
While sections of Liverpool fans have been calling for the head coach’s head, Slot undoubtedly feels there are mitigating circumstances behind the meek Premier League title defence.
A reason Slot believes the Reds sit just fifth in the table is their failure to put away their chances in front of goal. Speaking before the 2-1 loss to Brighton before the international break, Slot said: “You are saying we're struggling to score goals and then you added in the first half. I would say we are struggling to score goals. Not that we don't score them, but with all the chances we create, it's unbelievable that we don't score more, especially looking at the quality we are having up front and throughout the whole team. But I don't look at games like that, like, 'OK, they will score in the second or the first half or are we first or second.”
Per The Athletic, Liverpool have spurned 55 big chances in the Premier League throughout the season. The Reds have scored 50 goals in 31 league games, which is fewer than Arsenal (61), Manchester City (60), Manchester United (56) and Chelsea (53).
Certainly, the likes of Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo will be disappointed with their respective output in the final third.
