AC Milan are always on the lookout for opportunities to strengthen the squad, and that especially includes free agents.
In a feature earlier this week, we picked out five players who are on expiring contracts that could be of use for Milan. The management must address various gaps in the squad and bulk it out ahead of an almost certain return to playing in Europe, so saving money on transfer fees could be welcome.
MilanNews have begun their own report by putting together an XI of players that will be free agents this summer: Sommer, Guerrero, Rudiger, Konate, Robertson; Casemiro, Goretzka, Kessié; Bernardo Silva; Vlahovic, Lewandowski. Some of those names could appeal.
The four stand-outs
Antonio Rudiger would bring aggression, personality, individual duels and a reputation for playing big nights. In an Allegri-led defence, he would be the ‘perfect centre-back’, commanding the team and the tempo. However, his age (33) and physical condition are concerns, as are his current €15m gross salary.
Leon Goretzka is a name that has been strongly linked. He brings physicality, work rate, technical ability and even goals. The issue? The €18m gross per year he gets now is a significant sum, and – at that age, with that salary – you need to be sure you’re signing a top starter.
Bernardo Silva would certainly be a boost to the technical level too, providing a link between midfield and attack. He would be ‘perfect to bring control and class to Milan’. However, there’s also a huge financial concern: his estimated gross salary of nearly £16m. There’s a theme developing here.
Finally, Robert Lewandowski remains the striker who is the biggest name that has been linked. For Allegri, he would be the ideal No.9, with his class and penchant for the big nights. The hurdle? You guessed it: his €21m gross annual salary, and some strong competition no doubt.
So, there are plenty of names on the list of upcoming free agents that Milan might cast an admiring glance to. However, with the absence of a transfer fee often comes big wage and commission demands. Igli Tare and co. will have to decide whether it is worth it.
