Denzel Dumfries remains on Liverpool’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window according to reports in Italy.
Liverpool first explored a move for the Inter Milan right-back late in the January window, when Jeremie Frimpong suffered a hamstring injury during a Champions League win over Qarabag.
Reports in Italy claimed at the time the Reds lodged an enquiry with Inter, seeking information on Dumfries’ fitness and availability as they weighed up emergency cover on the right of defence. Fabrizio Romano later revealed that while Liverpool asked about the Dutchman and were informed his ankle issue was only a short-term problem, they never progressed to a formal bid before the deadline.
Inter were also unimpressed by the timing of the interest.
Fast forward to this international break and the situation has flared up again. Frimpong limped off just 13 minutes after coming on for the Netherlands against Ecuador, the latest in a series of muscle problems that have disrupted his debut season on Merseyside. It is already his fourth separate injury of the campaign. Unsurprisingly, that has dragged Dumfries’ name back into the conversation.
L’Interista report that a release clause in Dumfries’ contract will become active in the summer in July, believed to be worth around €25m. At that point Inter would be powerless to demand a higher fee.
Liverpool is again mentioned among the clubs monitoring the situation, along with Aston Villa and several Premier League rivals, ahead of what could be a relatively inexpensive route to a proven international full‑back.
Even so, a deal still feels like a stretch. Liverpool’s recruitment has skewed heavily towards players in the 20–25 age bracket with room to grow in value and performance, whereas Dumfries would be closing in on 30 by the time any move materialised.
Unless Frimpong’s injury issues become long‑term and the market offers no younger alternatives, it is hard to see Liverpool committing significant wages and a multi‑year contract to a player outside their usual profile – no matter how tempting that release clause looks.
