Loan + mandatory purchase clause – Wolves transfer builds for player who doesn’t fancy Championship

Celta Vigo are pushing forward with their plans for next season, which include bringing Fer López back from Wolves at the end of his loan transfer spell.

Faro de Vigo report on the Wolves midfielder today and how the Spanish club are working to ensure they don’t lose him at the end of the season.

According to the newspaper’s information, everyone wants the 21-year-old to remain at the club next season, and Celta are exploring all possible formulas to keep him.

That includes a loan with a mandatory purchase clause. But the reality is that a deal will be complicated.

Wolves won’t let €23m signing go cheaply

Wolves paid €23m to sign Fer López from last summer and he’s tied to a contract until 2030.

Despite his struggles at Molineux, they’re not willing to let him leave without recovering a significant amount of that investment.

They already rejected a long-term loan deal in January before eventually agreeing to a six-month deal.

López has little appetite to play in the Championship, though, a factor Celta are hoping to leverage to their advantage. They are also hoping for help from López’s agent, Jorge Mendes. He still wields some power at Wolves to influence such a deal.

The options on the table

The Spanish club are working through several scenarios for the transfer:

Straight loan extension – The simplest route is a season-long loan with Celta covering the salary and paying a fee. Fer López would have to take a pay cut.

Loan with option to buy – Essentially a softer version of a permanent deal, giving Celta flexibility while keeping Wolves protected as well.

Loan with mandatory purchase clause – The most realistic pathway to a deal. Celta would commit to buying Fer López next summer, while Wolves retain a high percentage of any future sale.

Direct transfer – Celta simply buy him outright. This option is seen as unlikely unless Wolves dramatically reduce their demands for the midfielder.

Why Wolves are open to talks

Wolves are open to negotiations over Fer López after his disappointing spell in England earlier this year. He managed just 330 minutes in nine matches across three difference managers, failing to find his place under any of them.

His loan to Celta was seen as a chance to rebuild value, and the player has done that. He’s a key player in Celta’s plans and impressing week by week.

The Spanish side want him permanently and López wants the move as well. But Wolves want their money back, or at least a healthy portion of it. At this moment in time, Celta won’t commit to that.

Thus, the three parties need to find a middle ground that suits everyone, hence the various options now being explored to make the deal happen.
