Vitaliy Mykolenko
Everton have some injury news from the international break. Defender Vitaliy Mykolenko has picked up an adductor injury while on duty with Ukraine.
Champion report on the 26-year-old today, including comments from Ukraine manager Serhiy Rebrov regarding the Everton full-back.
Suspicious absence
Vitaliy Mykolenko was a surprise omission from the Ukraine side that took on Albania on Tuesday evening.
The Everton defender had been expected to start the game, having been an almost constant feature in the team since his debut in 2018.
Instead, he was left out of the side, with Bohdan Mykhailichenko instead starting the game. Rebrov then explained the change.
“Unfortunately, he felt (something). He says that yesterday he went to the doctors, but I didn’t know anything about it. And when we were deciding with the main squad, he said that he was ready,” the Ukraine manager explained.
“Unfortunately, he got this injury, but as far as I can see now, he says that it’s not that serious, and he has 5 days off now. I’m sure that he will return to Everton in normal condition.”
Everton injury concerns
Everton will certainly be concerned about the situation given the role Vitaliy Mykolenko continues to enjoy under David Moyes.
He’s the first choice left-back under the Scot, featuring in the starting XI 84% of the time and enjoying the same percentage of minutes to date.
Losing him at this stage of the season, with European football on the line, would be a major problem for Toffees.
They do have Adam Aznou as back up, but he has barely featured this season. There is also the option of using Jarrad Branthwaite at left-back, which Moyes has done on occasion this season as well.
The important thing will be determining the extent of the injury. Mykolenko’s willingness to play suggests it’s only a mild issue at best. That could give him time to recover as Everton don’t play until April 11th.
