Opinion: David Moyes may have just dropped Everton contract hint with Harry Catterick target

David Moyes may have just made it clear that his future remains at Everton amid the contract speculation.

Everton still hold one year on Moyes’ current deal on Merseyside, but the 62-year-old has set an ambitious target he wants to achieve.

Harry Catterick currently holds the record for most games managed at Everton.

David Moyes sets Harry Catterick target amid Everton contract rumours

There is a belief that Everton are set to offer Moyes a new contract ahead of the summer.

It has been a sensational return for the 62-year-old, with the Blues pushing for European qualification, but Moyes wants to lift silverware.

Moyes’ current deal expires next year… 🤔

“It’s incredible even to be thought about [alongside Catterick], because I wasn’t sure if I would ever come back or if it was going to happen. It’s been great for me, it really has,” Moyes said on Everton TV.

“I think it’s certainly in my blood, and if I can beat his record, it would be amazing. But what I need to prove is that I can win trophies at Everton as well.”

“Harry Catterick, you know, won trophies. I would need to show that I can do that as well.”

Wayne Rooney was disappointed by Everton’s cup exits this season, with early eliminations from both the FA and Carabao Cup.

Securing European football for next season will gloss over the cup disappointment, but it did mark two good opportunities at silverware passed up on.

Moyes may need more years to lift Everton silverware

Everton have not won silverware in over three decades now, which may well mean Moyes is going to need more than just next season to achieve something special.

Securing European qualification would certainly put a new strain on the squad for next season, with an increased number of games in the schedule.

That could well see the domestic cup competitions neglected again on Merseyside.

Given some of the issues clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest have experienced in trying to compete on all fronts, that would be expected on Merseyside.

With just one year remaining on his deal at Everton, perhaps Moyes is going to need an extension if he is to try and put a dent in Catterick’s two league titles and one FA Cup.
