Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been charged with improper conduct towards a fourth official after being sent off against Bournemouth, the Football Association (FA) has confirmed.

Before the international break, Maguire was shown a red card for pushing Bournemouth forward Evanilson to the ground in the penalty area. Referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot, despite waving away a similar challenge on Amad in the Bournemouth box earlier in the game.

Maguire protested the decision to Atwell before speaking to the fourth official as he departed the pitch. The FA have charged Maguire with allegedly acting in an improper manner towards the fourth official.

The FA released a statement saying: “Harry Maguire has been charged after being sent off in the 78th minute of Man Utd’s Premier League match against Bournemouth on March 20.

“It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal.

“Harry Maguire has until April 2 to provide a response.”

The Manchester Evening News has contacted United for comment on whether the club will appeal the decision. Maguire will serve a one match ban for the red card, meaning he will miss the game with Leeds later this month, and is facing the possibility of receiving an additional ban from the FA over his actions.

After the Bournemouth draw, Maguire wrote on social media: "So soft but that’s where football is at atm (at the moment) and I should know better. You would think both decisions would reach the same outcome. We will be back after the break. Safe travel home reds , your support has been unbelievable."

Speaking after the game, Carrick was asked about Attwell's refereeing and said: "My first [thought] is he definitely got one of them wrong, because he's given one penalty for the same thing that he's not given one as a two-armed grab.

"The Matheus one, he gives, the second one on Amad, he doesn't, which is, I think, almost identical, really, two hands on someone in the box, and they go over, and they're in control of the ball.

"For me, it's two penalties, but it'd be interesting to see which one he acknowledges is wrong, whether the one we got or the one that we didn't get. And it's a huge moment.

"You don't give it, they go down to the other end and score and then it needs to be a bigger penalty to overturn just because they scored when actually it's a penalty and it should be a penalty if you've already given one.

"So a bit baffling, really, to make sense of that. And because they score, then the game flips a little bit and changes and then we defended with the 10 men after all that very well and the boys coming off the bench and finishing the game really strong.

"That was a big positive for us to take the point in the end because we've seen them win late here so we take that, but the penalty one's just astonishing, I have to say, one of them must be wrong."
