Jeremie Frimpong has suffered yet another setback, adding to Liverpool's injury woes. Frimpong, 25, has already missed 19 games in his debut season at Anfield and recently returned from a month-long layoff.

But Liverpool's new £29.5million star could be set for another spell on the sidelines. After coming on as a substitute at half-time during the Netherlands' 1-1 draw with Ecuador on Tuesday, Frimpong lasted just 13 minutes.

The right-back pulled up and immediately had to come off. Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman commented: "That was a real setback. We had to take him off."

It's feared that Frimpong has suffered his fourth different hamstring injury since joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. With Conor Bradley and Wataru Endo also out with long-term injuries, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has regularly been used at right-back.

Frimpong faces a race against time to be fit for Saturday's FA Cup clash with Manchester City. The Reds will then resume their Champions League campaign against Paris Saint-Germain next Wednesday.

The two quarter-finals come before a Premier League game at home to Fulham on Saturday, April 11. Liverpool are fifth in the table, five points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Injuries have been a factor in the Reds' ailing title defence. Alongside the likes of Frimpong, Bradley and Endo, stars such as Mo Salah, Alexander Isak, Alisson, Federico Chiesa, Giovanni Leoni and Stefan Bajcetic are also out.

Hugo Ekitike also came off in the opening stages of their 2-1 loss away to Brighton before the international break. Slot bemoaned post-match: "We had Mo Salah injured, we had Alisson injured, and after two minutes Hugo Ekitike out.

"That has happened so many times to us this season and again now."

The Liverpool boss added: "If you face a team that has only had 62 hours of rest, the first thing you do is make it an intense game, play the first duels, play tough duels. Nothing wrong with the duels, by the way, but unfortunately, it was a collision and that led to Hugo going out.

"They were the better team and created more chances than us. Everything I say about this, people will see this as excuses and I never like to use excuses after the game."
